Underneath mount Helmos
Tetramythos is an organic winery located in Aegialia and specifically inside the protected Natura geopark zone of mythical Mountain Chelmos at North-west Peloponnese. The area’s geodiversity combines impressive gorge, forests, cold springs, rivers and lakes among the high and steep slopes of Aroania sierras mountains. This region has a longstanding tradition in winemaking and viticulture, as can be found in many ancient chronicles.
The long wine-growing history, led to an early specialisation on organic farming in Aegialia, which gathers the highest percentage of organic farming in Greece. Therefore, Tetramythos vineyards were certified organic since 1996, among the first organic vineyards of Greece, completing the existing tradition. The vineyards altitude ranges from 650 up to 1050 meters above sea level, one of the highest and coldest wine regions of the country. The steep slope cultivation, the cool sea-breeze coming from the nearby sea of Corinthian Gulf, along with the complex limestone soils are offering the grapes fresh aromatic character, high natural acidity and a distinctive mineral finish. The cultivated grape varieties are indigenous Greek, but also few international, all hand-picked, with most significant the Roditis and the very local Black of Kalavryta. Tetramythos produces minimal intervention, terroir-driven wines, reflecting the quality and the elegance of Aigialeia slopes.
The beginning was made by the brothers Aristides and Stathis Spanos, born and raised in the village of Ano Diakopto where the winery is located. They got involved with grape growing and wine production at a very young age. In 1999, they met Panagiotis Papagiannopoulos, an also local and experienced oenologist. Together shared their dream of organic farming and production of expressive wines originating from this historical terroir. The following years they bottled small production wines from the existing family-owned vineyards but also add new plantings of more indigenous Greek grape varieties. Eventually the winery was established in 2004 and nowadays 85% of the annual production (approx. 300.000 bottles) is exported in 22 different countries around the globe.
The winery is accepting visitors and holds interesting wine tastings and tours in the winery and vineyards.
