In the Valley of the Muses
The Muses Estate is located in Ascra, Boeotia. The vineyards that produce the grapes for the winery's wines are spread out in the beautiful Muses Valley, a place with a long history of winemaking.
It is believed that the 9 Muses, the daughters of Zeus and the inspiration for many of the greatest works of Greek literature, lived in the valley in ancient times. One of the most famous of these writers was Hesiod, who wrote extensively about wine and winemaking in his poems.
The winery was founded in 1946 by Nikolaos Zacharias, a local winemaker who was passionate about preserving the region's winemaking tradition. When his son Athanasios took over in 1967, he modernized the winery and began to produce wines of even higher quality.
In 2005, the third generation of the Zacharias family, the brothers Nikos, Stelios, and Panagiotis, joined the winery. They have continued to invest in the winery and to produce award-winning wines.
The estate's wines are coming from vineyards of 50 hectares in total and they are made from a plethora of Greek and international grape varieties, including the local red grape Mouchtaro. Mouchtaro use to be an obscure grape variety of the area, but it has quickly become one of the winery's most popular wines. It is known for its deep color, rich flavor, and long finish.
The Muses Winery has a capacity of 1,000 tones. It is open to visitors and offers tours and tastings. It is a great place to learn about the history of winemaking in the Muses Valley and to sample some of the region's finest wines. It's easily accessible by car and it's quite close to Athens.
