A name steeped in wine history
The winemaking tradition of the Boutaris family began in Naoussa, a region known for its wine for centuries (the first written mention of Naoussa wine dates back to the 13th century AD). The family business was founded in 1879.
In 1997, Giannis Boutaris, one of the most influential Greek wine producers, founded the Kir-Yianni Estate. He was the first to believe in the potential of Xinomavro, a grape variety that was then almost forgotten. He bought a piece of land in Naoussa in 1968, and planted 40 hectares with the variety, which became the core of the estate. Today, Kir-Yianni Estate has over 85 hectares in Naoussa and Amyntaio.
The reins of the family business have been passed on to Giannis Boutaris' children, Stellios and Michalis, who, together with a very experienced team, work hard to produce some of the most recognizable wines in the country, while innovating in the development and promotion of Greek wine internationally.
The vineyards of Kir-Yianni Estate are located on two sides of Mount Vermio (east - Naoussa vineyard, north - Amyntaio vineyard), in Macedonia and are organically cultivated. Xinomavro is the main variety of the estate, which also produces wines from other important varieties, such as Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Merlot.
The estate has two wineries, in Giannakohori Naoussa and Agios Panteleimonas Amyntaio. The harvest, for the most part, is done by hand. The grapes go through multiple sorting phases and modern methods are applied for the fermentation process. Some of the wines are aged in the cellar of the Naoussa winery with the use of 225 and 500 liter oak barrels. The average annual production reaches 1,500,000 bottles.
Kir-Yianni Estate is open to the public for visits and tastings. Visitors can tour the vineyards, visit the wineries and taste the wines of the estate. Visits are held daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. More information about the tours and activities can be found here.
