Among the vines of Dafnes
Situated at the heart of the viticultural zone of Dafnes in Heraklion, there are 20 ha of estate owned vineyards at an altitude of 350 - 400m .The whole area holds a long tradition in viticulture and winemaking going back to the times of Venetian rule of the island. The winery is also working with local growers, whose vineyards (approx. 25 ha) is currently managing.
The history of the winery begins in the 1930s when grandfather Dimitris Douloufakis starts making wine with traditional means. In 1993 Nikos Douloufakis, the current owner, takes over the estate, modernizing the equipment and moving on reorganising and replanting the vineyards, a work started by his father in the 80s, after the phylloxera pest hit the island.
In 2000, Nikos Douloufakis starts working on the, obscure at the time, local grape variety of Vidiano. This variety has since played an important role in the winery's brand and has ascended to be one of the most promising white grape varieties in the country. It's worth noting that since 2001 the entire estate grown vineyard is certified as organically cultivated.
Aside Vidiano, many important local varieties are found in the estate like Vilana, Malvasia di Candia and highly regarded red Liatiko as well as international ones such as Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese. A restless spirit, Nikos along his son (the 4th generation) have been successfully experimenting with the traditional method for sparkling wines and skin contact amphora fermented wines, expanding the landscape of wine in Crete.
The winery is open for visits and guests can have guided tours of the estate and try the estate wine in the beautiful tasting room. An appointment is advised.
